Yongkang – known as Lizhou in ancient times - was established in 245 AD (the 8th year of Wu Chiwu, during the Three Kingdoms period) and has a history of more than 1,700 years. It is said that Sun Quan's mother, Wu Guotai, came here as a pilgrim because of her illness, and gave the city the name "Yongkang” (“Yongbao Ankang”, meaning: “Safe and healthy") after her recovery. Yongkang's hardware industry has a long history as well. Since the ancient times, the legend of "The Yellow Emperor casting a tripod" lives on, with the traditional mastery of casting swords in the Spring and Autumn period, and casting bronze weapons during the Tang Dynasty. Yongkang e-commerce is at the forefront of China's county e-commerce development and has been listed as China's Top 10 agricultural e-commerce counties, Ali's Top 10 E-commerce counties, China's Top 10 Mass e-commerce Entrepreneurship counties, China's top 10 Taobao Village cluster, and the national super-large Taobao Village cluster. China's first Taobao live village broadcast academy to be based in Yongkang. Yongkang has now 14 towns (subdistricts) and 2 provincial industrial parks under its jurisdiction, with a registered population of 621,000 and 549,500 migrants. In 2021, the regional GDP has reached 72.223 billion yuan, and the local fiscal revenue accounted for 11.22 billion yuan, ranking among the top 100 counties in the country for 16 consecutive years. Yongkang's industrial economy ranks among the top 19 cities in its province. In 2021, it achieved a total industrial output value of 100.98 billion yuan; it has three provincial-level industrial platforms, namely the Economic Development Zone, the Modern Agricultural Equipment High-tech Zone, and the Hardware Headquarters Center, as well as two future development platforms: the National Forestry and Grass Equipment Science and Technology Innovation Park, and the Hardware Logistics Port, and several small and micro garden platforms. The economic development zone covers an area of 26.1 square kilometers and is one of the largest characteristic industrial parks in Zhejiang Province, with more than 2,000 industrial enterprises; the modern agricultural equipment high-tech zone covers an area of 22.89 square kilometers, and gathers more than 1,700 industrial enterprises; Hardware Headquarters Center is one of the first modern service industry cluster demonstration areas in Zhejiang Province, covering an area of 620 acres and a total construction area of more than 1 million square meters, and gathering more than 800 enterprises such as corporate headquarters, e-commerce, R&D and design, is the largest commercial CBD in Yongkang. The planned area of the National Forestry and Grass Equipment Science and Technology Innovation Park covers 1,500 mu (it will be expanded to 4,500 mu in the long-term), and it is planned to achieve an annual output value of 10 billion yuan within 5 years, creating an internationally influential forestry and grass equipment technology innovation park. The planned area of China Hardware Logistics Port is 9.6 square kilometers, with a planned total investment of about 25 billion yuan. A 10-year plan is in place to build a 100 billion-level modern industrial platform integrating logistics, manufacturing, and commerce. In terms of small and micro parks, 35 small and micro enterprise parks have been built or are currently under construction or planned, 10 of which have already obtained the provincial certification, and 4 have been recognized as star-rated parks (including 1 provincial 4-star park).

Yongkang Hardware industrial cluster is rated as "One hundred Best Industrial clusters in China", with industrial clusters including automobile industry, door industry, cup industry, electric tools, electrical kitchenware, leisure equipment, technical equipment, and metal materials and other industries. The production of security doors accounts for more than 80% of the national production, and the production of thermos cups and glass cups accounts for more than two-thirds of the whole national production. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, on the basis of the existing industries, Yongkang vigorously developed 3 strategic industries of modern hardware, high-end equipment and new materials, and actively expanded the 2 emerging hardware industries: electronic information, and life & health, making every effort to create a "3+2" modern manufacturing system, and accelerating the construction of "China’s and the world's advanced manufacturing base".

Private enterprises are "the foundation of Yongkang's industrial economy". There are more than 140,000 registered market entities of all kinds in the city, including 50,000 enterprises, 1,028 large industrial enterprises above standard size, 204 enterprises with a value exceeding 100 million yuan, more than 100 enterprises with tax payment exceeding 10 million yuan, and more than 99% are private enterprises. Yongkang not only developed its own economy, but also drove the development of surrounding counties and cities through industrial spillovers, forming the YongwuJin industrial cluster encircling the city, with Yongkang as its core. There are more than 100,000 people from Yongkang who do business and started a businesses abroad, and there’s a "300 billion output value": the first 100 billion output value is the annual output value of enterprises in Yongkang City; the second 100 billion output value is produced by enterprises founded by Yongkang people outside of Yongkang City; the third 100 billion yuan annual output value comes from the enterprises founded by Yongkang people outside Zhejiang Province.

Yongkang ranks 9th in the "Top 100 Innovative Counties in China" and obtains on average more than 7,000 patents each year.
